In this section you will find all of the monsters found in Setsuwa. The information provided is important, but a note must be made about it – just because you know all of this about a monster does not mean that your character will necessarily know all of this information. Each monster's table contains certain important information. I will go over that briefly here.
Name: Obviously this is just the name of the creature. Class: The class the creature belongs to. This determines which Deity or Demi-God it is under and also what kind of strengths and weaknesses it may or may not possess in the way of that said Deity or Demi-God. Average Level: As the title states this is simply the average level of the monster. Taming Level: The taming level shows you how difficult a creature is to tame. Diamonds display the taming level, the maximum amount is six and the minimum is one. Here is what they all mean:
◊ - Denotes a creature that is essentially tame already. They are pliable and are often sold in pet shops due to the ease of their nature.
◊ ◊ - Denotes a creature that is vaguely tame already. They are rather malleable to sentient suggestion and make good house pets.
◊ ◊ ◊ - Denotes a creature that is not tame, but can be tamed rather easily. These creatures will resist a rope to the end, though once captured and trained they become good pets. A decent trainer is necessary for training these creature.
◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ - Denotes a creature that is resistant to being caught. These creatures will try their hardest not to be captured, and once captured an owner must put in a good amount of time and effort to get the monster to trust them. If this can be done, these creatures will make good pets. A good trainer is necessary for training these creatures.
◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ - Denotes a creature that is dangerous to try and capture. These monsters are tameable, but they will be extremely resistant and are likely to have violent outbreaks at their new Masters until they become accustomed to being a pet. A skilled trainer is necessary for training these creatures.
◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ - Denotes a creature that is extremely dangerous to try and capture. These beasts may be tameable, but they will not go easily. They will fight the whole way and only the most skilled of trainers will be able to make it into a decent pet.
Description: The description of the creature.

Anxe communicate through tapping walls, floors and other surfaces with their long, stiff tails, as they have no voice box and cannot make a sound otherwise. They are known to be very disloyal and they enjoy their solitude. When a dark summoning spell is cast this is the most common creature to appear.

The appearance and colours of the mask vary with each specimen. The coloration of their short fur also varies, between yellows, browns, whites and blacks. Despite their size, they are also lithe and quick, their most dangerous assets being the strength behind their full-body charge and their dangerous fangs. Although serpentine, the Coutal has feathers over its scales in colours of beautiful purple and blue hues – sometimes Coutal feathers are the colours of rainbows. The Coutal has a pair of feathered winds with a span of fifteen feet. When Coutal moult, the feathers are often picked up to be used in potions. |
Name | Golem | Class | Mineral | Average Level | Twenty | Description | Golems are often misdefined as inanimate creatures built and given life by a very special breed of sorcerer. They are made of various kinds of rock or mineral and vary in size from the size of a fingernail to the size of a castle. Golems can be in nearly any shape or form, but are most often seen made in the likeness of a crude humanoid. |
Name | Griffon | Class | Wind | Average Level | Six | Taming Level | ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ | Description | A Griffon is a magnificient beast that is oft compared to a horse even though it has no part of a horse in it. It is the same size, though with the torso, tail and hind legs of a lion and the frontquarters and wings of a bird. One can also ride a Griffon the same way one could ride on a horse only a Griffon does not typically fare well on land with heavy weights - instead they prefer to take to the skies - which is where their food source is. A Griffon typically eats small birds and occasionally large bugs when their primary food source is running low. Griffons are not typically violent creatures, though when approached roughly or roped they have been known to attack...
|
Name | Grimalkin | Class | Darkness / Illusion | Average Level | Unknown | Taming Level | ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ | Description | A Grimalkin looks almost identical to your typical grey or black house cat, though there are a few major differences. The first is that Grimalkin are shape-shifters. They can become almost anything, and they use it nearly all the time. Grimalkin are hardly ever spotted in the wild for this very reason - they are never what they appear to be. A second, very important, aspect of a Grimalkin is the fact that it can speak in the language of any creature within ten feet of it, and they can speak into minds. This has made them very common pets for the blind and the deaf. In the wild, however, they are extremely dangerous and quite enjoy causing havoc.
|
Name | Quavill | Class | Natural | Native To | All | Average Level | One | Taming Level | ◊ | Description | Quavills are small, mouse-like creatures with long furry tails and large ears. Their bodies are round and fuzzy, making them look more like pom-poms than living creatures. Quavills are quite adorable and make for great pets, as they are virtually harmless on their own. However, packs of Quavills have been known to cause considerable damage by swarming victims and inflicting many small wounds, usually 1-2 inches in diameter, until the victim bleeds to death. The wounds themselves are hardly deadly, but a thinning agent in the Quavills saliva prevents the blood from clotting.
|
Name | Unicorn | Class | Light / Heavenly | Average Level | Seven | Taming Level | ◊ ◊ ◊ | Description | The Unicorn is essentially a wonderfully beautiful white horse with a glimmering horn of silver, crystal or diamond attached to its brain and protruding through its forehead. The longer the horn, the more powerful the Unicorn's magic will to be. As foals, Unicorns tend to be black or dark brown with dark coloured manes as well; they only turn white or silver as they age. Even the small horn that foals have is darker - made of coal, or granite normally, before it grows into a mare or stallion. Unicorns can attack in battle, tending to use their long pointed horns as weapons or charging at an opponent and attempting to trample them... Their magic is only used for good.
|
Name | Xankwile | Class | Death | Average Level | Ten | Taming Level | Cannot be tamed | Description | The Xankwile is a rather frightening creature that seems to be a mixture between a hyena and a porcupine. It has a mane of long, poisonous quills and a mangy look - as if it hasn't eaten a decent meal in quite some time. It attacks in various ways - biting and clawing, shooting off it's poisonous quills, or even spitting poison.
|
Name | Xinrra | Class | Water / Wind | Average Level | Eight | Taming Level | ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ | Description | The Xinrra is a distant relative of the Phoenix, seeming to almost be its duplicate... If there are many Xinrra flying about one knows that there is going to be a soaking rainfall, for they have a strange diet that consists of raindrops or snowflakes.
|
Name | Yuki-Onna | Class | Ice | Average Level | Unknown | Description | The Yuki-Onna is a Snow Woman, a fearsome being of ice. They take the form of beautiful women living in the Arctic Mountains, usually using their appearances to fool travelers into staying with them. They are notorious for having a convenient place to stay. Modern Snow Women may even take the form of young women wearing cute winter attire to make friends and exude a charismatic aura. In their true forms, Yuki-Onna encase their body in ice, their hands transforming into large, terrible claws, a pair of crystal-like wings appearing on some kinds. Their face becomes more monstrous, and their hair flays out and freezes, looking almost like a still mane. Snow Women have the capacity to freeze that which they touch, launch ice-based projectiles, and grow more powerful in a churning blizzard. It is said that if a lost traveler encounters a Yuki-Onna in a blizzard, then all hope is lost.
|
Name | Zizgran | Class | Cosmos | Average Level | Fourteen | Taming Level | ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ | Description | A great bird of the stars, a Zizgran is a high-class monster with wings that appear to be made of an otherworldly black metal. These wings do not move, instead the take an arch-like shape over the creature's back. It has a bright, orange plumage all over its ~7'5" body, and a pair of long, slender legs that end in rounded tips; there are no claws. Its tail plumage is the same orange colour, but seems to blend with the same metallic substance the wings are made of. Its long neck is also armored with this metal, and its proud head boasts a tall crown of feathers and a wicked, curved beak that can tear regular iron asunder. Zizgran fly at high speeds, and while an awe-inspiring sight to behold, should never be approached too closely unless one seeks a fight - the bird is highly vicious, and will attack anything it perceives as a possible threat or food. In addition to its beak, it also boasts the ability to channel and launch electricity through its crown feathers in a straight path.

The following are various types of Dragons found throughout all of Setsuwa. Dragons are an incredibly popular pet - for battles, guarding and competitions - and over time they have been bred into the most interesting varieties.
Name | Berrek
| Class | Natural
| Average Level | Twenty
| Taming Level | ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊
| Description | This dragon is one of the most feared in the world. It cannot fly, it cannot spit fire and it doesn’t even make a sound... But it is beyond terrifying. The Berrek looks and is extremely harmful. Large teeth sprout from it’s huge jaws. Two teeth on the lower jaw shoot up taller than it’s entire head and are made of some sort of unbreakable material. Another two behind them shoot downwards like saber-teeth, and although these can break, they grow back to normal size within ten days. Both of these are razor sharp and could cut through your skull the same way it could cut through parchment. The Berrek’s back is covered in a spiked spine of hard bone, each one ending in a needle-like point, and the scaly tail of the Berrek is in the shape of a thick fish hook that it uses to carry it’s food. Those aren’t the only frightening parts of the Berrek, however, as it also has extremely strong legs with giant claws the size of its head. The Berrek is only the size of a double bed, but it’s keen eyesight and killer appendages make up for any slight in size. Only the most daring of dragon tamers would dare approach this beast.

Average Level Five

Taming Level Cannot be tamed.

Description The Bowen is a thin, sickly looking dragon that is about the size of a lion. The classification of it as a dragon was highly debated for a long period of time, due to its lack of wings, but after an extensive study, it was shown that the dragon did in fact have wings - they just "molted" during the first year of life. For travel, the Bowen uses a shovel-shaped appendage on its snout to dig through the ground. The same appendage is used for defense. For offense the creature uses it's intense bite that has well over a thousand tons of crushing power.

Name | Charback
| Class | Fire
| Native To | Fiamont
| Average Level | Six
| Taming Level | ◊ ◊
| Description | This stoic dragon is known to live in volcanoes and to swim in the magma if it were just a pool of water. The Charback is a black-scaled dragon with one of the thickest layers of scales of any dragon, the scales are also as hard as diamonds. The Charback's back is layered with burning hot coals that take in all the heat that the Charback absorbs. The steam and smoke from this is stored in a series of glands along the back that it releases when threatened. Charback are known only to attack when defending themselves or their young, and are otherwise nothing to fear. They can only be ridden by fire embodiments, as any other creature would be irrevocably damaged by the heat.
|
Name | Crallen
| Class | Water
| Average Level | Three
| Taming Level | ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊
| Description | A deep sea dragon that camouflages perfectly in with the coral it calls home. The young of this dragon tend to be no bigger than an average human thumb, but as they grow, they have been known to get as big as three carriages strung together. Some say that several coral reefs identified within the oceans are actually sleeping or dead Crallen – the fact that some of these reefs have gone missing over time appears to support this theory. Crallen have been known to live in shallow waters, but are more commonly found it the deeper, darker depths of the ocean and are covered in glowing markings matched with a pair of bright glowing eyes. These creatures are not known to attack unless hungry, or threatened.
|
Name | Crimp
| Class | Natural
| Average Level | Seven
| Taming Level | ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊
| Description | This dragon is covered in a thick, coarse hair that hides an otherwise slender and snake-like body. Two horns, similar in look to an elk’s antlers, sprout from its head and are used to attack its prey. This dragon has no eyes on its body, and instead uses its tongue (which is one quarter the size of its body) to determine where things are. Two long arms come from the dragons front quarters, ending with sharp claws. It has no hind legs. It has never been seen to fly, though it is assumed that it does do so somehow as it would not be able to travel up in the clouds of Aurcaele, otherwise.
|
Name | Cyclops Raptor
| Class | Natural
| Average Level | One
| Taming Level | ◊
| Description | A small, puppy-sized dragon with a pleasant demeanour. This creature has a large head that takes up over a third of its entire size, and upon that head a platter-sized eyeball. Several spikes and horns decorate its bulbous cranium, but most of them are dull, just like it’s teeth and claws. This dragon has a stout form and small wings that only allow it to fly for short times and distances. The Cyclops Raptor has six pairs of legs, one coming out the front, two towards the ground. The top two act like arms as opposed to legs, although when used as legs the dragon's speed is increased two fold. These dragons are incredibly friendly and love to play with travelers.
|
Name | Deusa
| Class | Heavenly
| Average Level | Eight
| Taming Level | ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊
| Description | This dragon is told to be the heavenly pet of Ayniea, and thus is a revered creature in Aurcaele. Aurcaeli priests advocate the respectful treatment of them, even when these creatures ravage livestock. Although their behaviour leaves much to be desired, their look is akin to that of heavenly being for certain. It’s scales are pure white with ivory feathers flowing from thick pores. Shimmering, pure gold shapes and designs grow out of the back, head, wings and tail of this creature, it is said that these mark status in the creature’s population. Before the safety of these creatures was a priority a necropsy showed that this gold is actually bone that deforms beneath the epidermis before erupting and growing into magical shapes.
|
Name | Gentoo Dragon
| Class | Water/Ice
| Average Level | Nine
| Taming Level | ◊
| Description | This slender dragon is known to live in the Northern-most seas of Submiere, and the icy waters of Aissic. They can fly very proficiently, and are also known to travel by walking across land or icebergs, but they are most notable for their swimming ability. Gentoo Dragons can swim at incredible rate, an adaptation caused by fast-swimming prey (penguins). The Gentoo Dragon has a very classic look, a long, slender snout; a pair of thick horns; a long neck leading to a well-muscled body; a pair of lightly furred wings made for soaring cold skies; and a long, elegant tail. The Gentoo also has feet that, when wet, grow a temporary webbing between them for better traction in the water. The Gentoo is known to be a relatively gentle type of dragon, being known to save shipwrecked sailors.
|
Name | Jareiden
| Class | Natural
| Average Level | Six
| Taming Level | ◊ ◊
| Description | This is one of the most common, and one of the most simple, of all dragons in the world. It is found almost everywhere in Niseca and often in other parts of the world. This dragon is covered in green scales, has sharp teeth that are used to tear apart food, can blow fire, and fly throughout the sky like most common dragons. Jareiden are often chosen as pets or as a method of transportation because they are easily trained, and are about the size of a large horse.
|
Name | Shraptor
| Class | Earth
| Average Level | Two
| Taming Level | ◊ ◊
| Description | An interesting dragon only found in the deep depths of the Nisequois forests. This dragon is small enough to fit in the palm of a single hand and is covered in a growth of mushrooms. When these mushrooms are touched however, the cap dissolves off and a gas is released that allows the Shraptor’s fiery breath to be more effective against the attacker. Shraptor have been known to be tameable and kept as house pets, but most often are more of a fire hazard than anything else.
|
Name | Snowsnout
| Class | Ice
| Average Level | Nine
| Taming Level | ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊
| Description | This small-sized dragon is approximately the size of a baby elephant, a stature which easily deceives the uninformed. The Snowsnout is pure white for the purposes of camouflaging with its snowy surroundings in Aissic. Many mistake it's approach for a snowstorm, as it moves with an almost eerie silence but for the sound of wind passing over its wings. The Snowsnout has no roar, but it has no need for such a simple intimidation tactic. Instead it has teeth the size of two of an average human's middle fingers that lay in three rows within it's large mouth. These teeth rotate themselves out throughout the year, constantly growing fresher, sharper teeth to adapt to it's available prey. Being blind, the Snowsnout uses its incredible sense of smell to track.
|
Name | Weirdire
| Class | Death
| Average Level | Fifteen
| Taming Level | Cannot be tamed.
| Description | The Weirdire is a frightening species of dragon who's aggressive behaviour and poisonous attacks causes it to be well-known as a 'kill-on-sight' creature. The Weirdire has a very thin membrane in place of skin, and thus has adapted to a difficult life by seeping a web-like substance out of its pores that cover it's body in a thick and hard cocoon. This substance is toxic to the touch, and the Weirdire as also been known to use it as an attack. This kind of dragon has wings too frail for use, so it is built for walking and running long distances without breaking its casing. Instead of breathing fire, this dragon breathes toxic gases that some necropsies have determined come from a gland that has caused the eye of the Weirdire to grow twice the size of a human head and pulse with a golden glow. The dragon itself is the size of two elephants.
