a desperate diseaserequires a dangerous remedy katerinePLAGUEvexler GENDER Female RACE Elemental Elf - Death AGE Nineteen HEIGHT Five foot five WEIGHT Ninety one pounds - extremely underweight. APPEARANCE Katerine may not be the very definition of pale, but she is certainly the one of sickly. Her skin is white with a yellowing tinge to it, not something that many would find appealing. It appears to have dry cracks running along it like fissures caused by an earthquake in the middle of a desert. Accompanying these cracks are full-blown scars, rips and tears in her flesh. Two find their place on her right cheeks, ten along her right arm and three on her right, four decorating her stomach and back and another six - two on her left leg and four on the right. She also has spider veins on her hands and feet.
Her face looks like it could have been quite lovely before the scars, cracks and yellowing skin. She has wide, green eyes that can be considered very lovely, a wonderfully shaped nose leading to pouty lips... Alas, these are also cracked and dry. She has long, full eyelashes that frame the marsh balls quite nicely and perfectly arched eyebrows that frame those.
Her hair is bushy and forms around her face almost like a lion's mane. The brownish-red seems to go well with her eyes, but the stringy, tangled bits deny the beauty of the seeing orbs of her face... Occasionally she'll force it into something akin to a bun, but she usually doesn't quite care enough for that.
Typically you would see her wearing, around her neck, a thick black scarf with silver embroidery decorating the fluid-stained fabric. The rest of her clothing consists of a simple pattern-decorated smock that starts after her shoulders and falls down to her knees, covering some scars.
Black socks come up to just below her knees and lead into ratty brown shoes that look half a size too small for her size seven feet.
She skinny, sickeningly so. Skinny in a way that one can see bone through her skin as she moves. She's not flat-chested, but nearly so, perhaps only a size or half of one above that. One thing that seems to contrast with her appearance greatly are her nails. Fingernails and toenails that are in pristine condition... It seems rather odd, and like it isn't really a part of her.
She holds herself in no great regard, and it is seen in her posture. She looks slouchy most of the time, bony shoulders poking out like their a design on a shirt.
-One of her ghosts, Alana, wears a bloodied night gown and has long flowing hair. It is impossible to tell the colour due to her just being a pale translucent "shadow" of a person. What one can tell, however, is that she was likely a very beautiful woman when she was alive.
--Another ghost, Jackson, has a short cut, which was once a buzz cut when he was in the Artavian Military, a wound by his eye, and a cut throat that allows a skin flap to invariably flutter in an imaginative breeze. He wears normal clothes for a working class man, a smock and vest with pants and dirtied shoes. He is occasionally seen wearing reading glasses.
---He last ghost, Aras, has black skin and dreadlocks for his hair. His hair looks as if it may have been longer, but is now burnt down to a shorter length. He seems really badly cut up and extremely burnt all over his body, he wears a blank shirt that is cut at his elbows and regular pants - but no shoes. His clothing is charred as well.
POWER She can see, hear and speak to ghosts. PERSONALITY Due to the way she's been treated in her past, she's not a very open person. It takes her an exceedingly long time to get to trust someone, and to trust that they also trust her.
Katerine has not had any friends other than the ghosts that tag along wherever she goes, so she does not know how she would act with one. In reality, she would be one of the most loyal of friends - and probably quite the pushover. She'd be willing to do anything asked by a friend. Perhaps due to her innocence in that department, perhaps due to the worry of losing such a person in her life.
Katerine has been called schizophrenic because she can occasionally - often - be seen talking to herself. Of course, she's not talking to herself, but to ghosts who come to her because she can see them clear as day before they even know how to make themselves visible to a normal eye.
-Alana is quite cynical, she's always the one to assume the worst and believe that the only lining on anything is rather dark, dreary and black - and that things can only get worse.
--Jackson is serious, he thinks things through logically and does not talk often - when he does, however, it seems to be very important. Aras suspects that he has developed feelings for either Katerine or Alana - or himself, if Jackson swings that way.
---Aras is the jokester, always enjoying himself - even at other's expense. He's on the opposite side of the spectrum, believing everything can get better and that there is an upside to every down side. He's the most distracting to Katerine because he often talks to her when she's in a conversation with someone, or he tries to be a bit of a 'poltergeist'.
SEXUALprefs Undecided LIKES - Buntles, she finds that she can connect with them and that she's very much alike them. She finds them cute, and would love to have one as a pet.
- Loud noises, sometimes they hurt her head, but she likes to know that she's not alone and that there are people still with her, still keeping her company.
- Fruit, she has a soft spot for any fruit. She's not as fond of vegetables, but fruit is something that she could not live without. She's a firm believer in "an apple a day", and would like to add cherries, grapes, pomegranates, strawberries, melons and the like to that list.
- Acceptance, she likes it when people are able to accept others for who they are... Of course, she does not always necessarily do such a thing herself.
-Alana likes being cynical and people who stand up for themselves. That's pretty much it. --Jackson likes quiet, thoughtfulness, hard work, earning a living through the sweat if your brow and puzzles. ---Aras loves to play jokes on people, people who can take a joke, constant excitement and all sorts of animals - especially dogs.
DISLIKES - Her "ability" to speak with the dead, she liked it at first, and found that it was her calling... But then the ghosts kept coming, and coming. They were unrelenting and always wanted her help. She had to explain her ability to disbelieving people, which led to her alienation. She attempts to avoid ghosts, but Aras, Jackson and Alana make that virtually impossible.
- Dead silences, although she dislikes her ghost "friends" she more so hates it when its too quiet - or when she's alone. She likes loud places with lots of people.
- Judgemental people, this is quite hypocritical. She's a very judgemental person herself, but doesn't notice it. She only notices it when people do the same to her.
- Cats. She's allergic to them and cannot stand to be around them for very long at one time. They make her sneeze and puff up... She's puts up with Mia on the ship though, since its the first real family she's had.
-Alana dislikes cheerfulness, wife beaters, abuse, children --Jackson dislikes children, carelessness, and stupid people ---Aras dislikes people who are cynical, boring, whom can't take a joke and don't like him. He's also not very fond of being alone, which was why he looked for Katerine in the first place.
HISTORY She realizes how cliche and overused it sounds, but she was not treated well in her younger years. Her parents weren't the abusers, luckily for her, but as the other children and their parents heard of what she thought she could do they laughed her off like a joke. As she kept insisting, as she kept on telling people their dead friends, family, spouses were there with them - people got offended. They lived in just a small town in Muerte, and when they called a town meeting the small room that could fit two hundred was not full. With people, that is. It was quite full with loud noises, of reasons to get rid of the Vexlers - specifically their freakshow daughter.
There were those that spoke against the banishment, but out of the two hundred more of them were for it... Well, the banishment of the Vexler child. Katerine was officially banned from ever entering the small town again, her young age of seven kept her from realizing how horrible this was, but she did realize that it was scary.
Her parents were not happy they had to leave the town they had both grown up in. They loved their daughter, but at the same time they had so many memories... Plus they had other children. They treated Katerine like a princess, but in reality they were trying to kill her. They slipped potions into her drinks and food - sadly she would not eat them, it was as if someone had told her not to.
She was not doing well however, she had lost enough weight from not eating that she was merely skin and bones, and her parents were sick of their unsuccessful trying. Katerine was now eleven, it had been four years and they were done with this charade. They tried to plan how they were going to do it, but when they had a little too much to drink one night all of that went to the dogs.
They attacked little Katerine, and it seemed like that would be the end of her short and miserable life. How could a young girl with no muscle fight anyone off? The truth was, she didn't have to. Aras had already mastered grabbing things. He had to, to play pranks on the living. He grabbed the empty bottle and threw it. It landed in the middle of the back of Katerine's father head. He slumped onto his daughter, unconscious. The mother looked around for who had done such a thing, and then decided that it was nothing. She pushed her husband off their frail daughter's body and replaced him with herself. Her hands made a necklace around Katerine's throat as she throttled her daughter mercilessly.
Aras was even angrier that the mother had not stopped and reached for a chair to find that it was already up and floating - Jackson was tossing it. The throw was much more powerful, as Jackson had a lot of muscle from his work. It smashed into the mother's head, the legs broke off and one lodged itself into the woman's back... She joined her husband in the world of black.
Katerine, traumatized, didn't move. She was hyperventilating. She wasn't thinking. She couldn't think. She tried to sit up, but found it was too hard. She lay there for an hour. And then she heard the stirring next to her. Her father was waking up. A new found strength, perhaps a rush of adrenaline, filled her and she jumped up, and rushed towards the door - followed swiftly by her three ghosts.
Katerine was on her own, an eleven year old girl, fending for herself. She managed to find a way to make money by telling fortunes. She didn't have the brain for it, but she had three others she could use. She avoided any ghost (apart from Alana, Jackson and Aras) for the fear of a repeat occurrence.
By the time she was seventeen she had made enough money to sustain her simple life on, and seemed ready to deal with the constant onslaught of ghosts who bid her to help them... That was why she was in that town when the Defiled Grail came by, setting up in a known Pirate tavern and requesting crew members. Obviously new.
She was talking to a man about his dead son, who was sitting on a chair next to them, swinging his short legs as he watched his almost-drunken father chugging away at a bottle of some greenish liquid.
Perhaps it was the fact of him being drunk, but he did believe her. And that was such a great feeling, especially when she boy looked so happy, especially when the boys face lit up - literally - and he walked into something that she had not believed in before then. The light.
She stayed at the tavern that night, and wondered how hard it would be to travel. How expensive. That was when she saw the perfect answer, or at least Alana saw. She made a snide comment about pirates which caused Katerine to look over at two women with a piece of parchment ready for names.
She hardly thought before going up and asking to sign her name. They of course questioned her ability to be of any use - she had no muscles, she was frightening to look at. Aras told her to tell them she had great magic. She could do a lot of things without even saying words, or moving my hands. And then a candle stick was off the table, doing flips in the air.
She got signed up.
And now, after a year of being with the crew, she still has yet to inform them of her power. But she does work her ass off on board, to prove that she's worth keeping around... Plus she hasn't died yet, which came as a surprise to some who were put off by her appearance.
-Alana was an abused wife. She took verbal and physical abuse on an almost daily basis. As a child she had always believed she could do great things, perhaps that one day she could fly. Her husband told her that only angels could fly, that her feet would never get off the ground... At one point, she could not deal with it. She wrote a note to him, a note that said she loved him, but not what he did. He was off at an evening prayer. She unlatched the window of their bedroom and pulled. Wind gushed inside and blew her hair. She got herself up onto the ledge, took a deep breath and fell.
When she awoke she was no longer in her country of Liesdro, she was in Muerte. She knew she was dead. She realized it with her new-found cynicism. She saw the light but... When she found Katerine at a young age of six, however (another damaged soul) she didn't want to leave her.
--Jackson was a simple man, alone, working in the mines in Dirys after he had retired from the Artavian Military with nothing to show. He went for ale after a long days work, slept alone and then went back to do it all again. A cave in was his demise. He and three other men died in Dirys and woke up in Muerte like Alana. Jackson wanted there to be more than what he found, and refused to go into the light with his comrades until he had discovered everything he had wanted to know. When he found Katerine he decided that staying with her might help him do just that. Katerine was eight at the time. A year after the banishment.
---Aras loved life. Every last bit. He loved women, wine, music, he couldn't get enough. He loved a laugh and he loved the colour... But when he was murdered because of his own colour - the colour of his skin, which was odd where he lived - the colour of the world seemed to go away. Everything seemed so dingy and dark and he didn't like it that way. He wanted the colour back. His lack of completion drove him to find someone who could help - and that was when he found Katerine. Only a month before her parents were to get drunk and try to throttle her. He didn't like that, that wasn't fun at all. He decided to stay and help - hoping that the colour would return.
