Skylar opens the barrel and inside finds surprisingly fresh fish. Other than that, however, he also spots some glittering gold coins... In fact, one hundred and fifty gold coins.

Skylar winced when he opened the barrel, but it was from reflex and not the actual presence of a dangerous creature. He glanced around and noticed there was definitely not anything waiting to jump out at him, so he focused on the contents of the barrel for the first time. Fish. Lots of fish. And... gold? Oh boy! Gold! Wait a minute, the fish looked like it had been caught and put in the barrel relatively recently, which meant that someone had to have caught them. Maybe that same someone was the owner of the gold coins scattered about in there? What if Skylar took the money only to run into the person who it rightfully belonged to? Oh dear, that would not be a pleasant experience. Everything else in here wanted to kill him; he didn't want to provoke anything else into wishing him harm.
In the end, though, he convinced himself that if he ran into the person who owned the fish and the money he could tell him... or her.... or it that he had found the money on the ground, or maybe say he was just keeping it safe because it was very vulnerable in that barrel. Then again, how would the person even know he had taken it? How would he know that Skylar hadn't just come into the cave with a bunch of gold? He couldn't possibly. Therefor, it was relatively safe to take the money and simply continue on his merry way. Not that his way was particularly merry to begin with, but if he had extra money with him it would certainly be a bit merrier.
So he did take the money, then put the lid back on the barrel and sat down on it, smelling the familiar and comforting smell of fish and with a slightly heavier pouch of gold. His feet appreciated not being stood on any more and he himself appreciated not being chased by something that wanted to eat him. Durig this time, he pulled out Magical History and started reading.

While Skylar sits and reads, the sounds of the cave continue. The roaring of the occasional creature, the scattering of a hoard of bugs, the groans of distant zombies and the slow stepping of feet... Or paws... Or claws.

Despite the unnerving sounds around him, Skylar continued reading undisturbed. No crazy monster approached him, the fish in the barrel beneath him didn't magically turn into something that was going to eat him, and he finished his book without trouble. Glad for the break, he pulled out his Beginner's Guide to Magic and read it as well, while he had the chance. At the sound of sharp claws scraping against the ground nearby, he jumped and cringed, but didn't run away. If whatever it was was planning on attacking him, he could deal with it then. Until that happened, he would be reading his book.

From the depths of the direction you entered from, a creature emerges. It appears to be the size of a housecat, but looks more dangerous. Beyond gray fur it seems to be near the point of starvation and its mandibles appear to be gushing with drool. Sharp eyes stare straight ahead to Skylar as it paces towards him. Its untrimmed claws pad away at the ground and it continues to move closer and closer...

Skylar had almost passed the noise off as just another one the cave was throwing at him. Until he could see the creature in his peripheral vision, that was. Then he practically jumped out of his bones, dropping his book to the ground (good thing he had pretty much finished it) and standing behind the barrel, thinking that atleast it would give him more protection than simply standing out in the open. The creature approached slowly, ominously, looking as though it hadn't eaten properly in weeks and drooling at it stared at him. Yet another thing that wanted to eat him for dinner. This was just not his day.
It was then that he realized the thing coming toward him looked pretty much like a cat. Cats are known to eat fish. There was a giant barrel of fish right in front of him. He hoped this cat creature wasn't exempt to the liking fish thing and kicked the barrel over, hoping to spill the fish out onto the cavern floor and distract the beast long enough to run away. Maybe if it was distracted enough, he could pick up his book before he left.

The cat-like creature hissed slightly at Skylar's movements to the far side of the barrel. However, when he kicked it over and spilled the fish, it mewed. Pouncing forwards it began tearing apart the fish happily, quickly looking more normal. The creature's shape shifted so that it was of a small size, and of a darker fur colour. In fact, it looked like a kitten. It mewed happily as it ate away all the food, no longer caring about Skylar now that it had what it wanted.

Skylar watched in awe as the angry-looking death cat of ultimate evil mewed and pounced on the fish, shifting into what looked almost like a little kitten. Skylar didn't think he had seen anything quite as adorable as that in, well, ever. There weren't exactly cats in Submiere. Even while it was tearing the fish to pieces it still managed to look so cute and innocent that he just wanted to scoop it up and pet it and talk like people generally do when speaking to adorable little pets, or babies. But, he had to remind himself, that very same little kitty had also just looked like it was about the most ferocious thing in the planet and he really didn't want to mess with it. But... when it looked as cute as it did now, how could he not just want to hug it?
Since it seemed distracted and content now that it had food, Skylar figured he could probably get his book from where it had fallen without getting his head ripped off his neck, so he carefully and slowly crept toward it and reached out his hand, making sure to keep his eyes on the kitten in case it decided it actually did want to eat him.

The cat just continued it's content eating of the fish. Bite after bite. It certainly did appear as though it had gone hungry for a while, and now it was submitting to it's very gluttonous urges with the fish. Skylar reaching for his book went completely and totally ignored.

Sighing with relief at not being attacked, Skylar grabbed his book and backed away slowly, pausing for a moment as he continued watching the little kitty eat. He'd always wanted a cat... What are you THINKING?!? That is a crazy wild animal that would probably just as easily kill you as let you pet it. Don't you even THINK about trying to tame it and keep it as a pet. That's what PET STORES are for you fool! His inner dialogue was right, much as he didn't want to admit it. After all, it was just so darn cute! But no, he couldn't. He could go get a cat from the pet store if he wanted one so badly, and trying to tame a wild thing that could shape shift was just complete stupidity. And possibly suicidal.
Well, his rest area was compromised so he headed down the tunnel in the way that he had not yet come from to see if he couldn't find another.

| The next stretch is fifteen feet until Skylar is forced to turn left, but before he can see in front of him, something crawls through his legs and a mewing comes from the same area. 'Hihi,' comes the sound of a toddler in Skylar's mind. At his feet the cat from before slips through, obviously pleased with the meal and now wanting some love and affection. |

Skylar brushed the dust and small rocky bits from his book and was saddened when he found that the corner had been bent out of shape from its fall. Oh well, he could have it fixed when he got out of here, or maybe he could leave it as a memoir of his unfortunate day here. He almost walked into a wall when the cavern shifted direction while he wasn't paying attention, but quick reflexes saved his nose and forehead from injury. As he continued walking he flinched when suddenly he felt something brush against his leg. It felt furry and he had just begun imagining all sorts of furry spiders crawling around his legs when he noticed what it actually was. Shortly after that, he heard a noise which he could only assume was coming from the little kitty, which seemed to have followed him once it had finished eating.
He practically couldn't contain his joy! He grinned from ear to ear as the tiny creature looked up at him with its big, adorable eyes and he had a little bit of a mental squeal of happiness. Then, carefully, he knelt down and held out his hand for the little thing to sniff before daring to pet it. He'd heard from people that letting an animal sniff your hand or whatever was safer than just going to pet it immediately, so he figured that would be a smart idea considering how menacing it had looked before. "Hi there fella, had enough to eat?"

'Me girl,' Came the mental reply that went directly into Skylar's thoughts. She rubbed her head all over his proffered hand, mewing and purring lightly as it did so. Ahead, the path looks like it continues for fifteen feet before the path slants upwards, the ceiling only doing so slightly less so it required one of tall height to bend to fit through.

Skylar heard a sound again, only this time he could tell that it was not being said aloud. It was also said in Common, though slightly broken, which could probably be attributed to the creature's young age. "Ah, a girl." He pet the cat and scratched it lightly behind the ears while he checked out where he was now and where he was heading. "Do you have a name?" he questioned, feeling sort of weird talking to a kitten and expecting an answer. Usually animals didn't talk back. But he was sort of glad this one did; he didn't generally like hanging around people, but if an animal could talk he would have no problem letting it hang around.

The small cat purred contentedly as Skylar scratched it behind the ears and it almost missed Skylar's question. It took it a moment to decipher what was being said, but when it did it had to stop for even longer to decide what it's answer should be. 'Me no know,' It telepathed, performing a cat shrug. 'Me come you, you give name?' If this person could give it food, then obviously they were nice. The poor thing couldn't fend for itself, after all.

The kitten purred and replied to his question with an 'I don't know', only spoken like a little kid who didn't have full command of the language. The kitten then suggested that he give her a name, since she was going to come with him. He did a mental happy dance and tried to think of a good name for a cat. He'd never named a cat before, or knew any cats with names, but he tried to think of one anyway. It didn't have to be perfect, or a name specifically for a cat either. The little kitten probably wouldn't know the difference. "How about Jinx?" he suggested.

The kitten simply nodded this time, purring as well to get its contentedness across. It escaped his hand for a moment to weave through his legs, rubbing its head on him to ensure that now they belonged together. That's what she had seen all of those other cats doing before, so she decided that she may as well do it too. 'Where we go?' She telepathed looking both back at where the barrel of fish would still be laying, and then ahead to where she believed her newfound friend had not yet gone exploring.

The kitten purred and wove through his legs again which he assumed was a confirmation that she liked the name Jinx. She went on to ask where they were going now and he grinned. "Well, I'm not really sure. We're heading in that direction," he pointed the way he had been going before the cat had followed, "and I guess we'll see what happens from there, shall we?" He started walking down the cavern in the way that he had not yet gone, trusting the little cat to follow him or run ahead and whatnot.

(Skylar obtained: Grimalkin (Kitten) )
Skylar travels twenty five feet up the sloping path until he arrives in a large open area. Locked up barrels and treasure chests cover every empty space along the wall in this room and in the centre of the room there is a large stone panel. The panel in the centre of the room holds a large dial on it that looks as though it would be quite difficult to move without being particularly strong or adept in magic. The dial is surrounded by four missing tiles from the panel. Each of them at twelve o'clock, three o'clock, six o'clock and nine o'clock in relation to the dial respectively.
The dial itself is divided into several sections, each with its own shape or picture on it. There is a circle, a square, a cat or catlike creature, a humanoid girl, a humanoid boy, a snake, a diamond sitting on a circle, a bird, a fish, a quill, a piece of jewelery and then a dog or a dog-like creature...
